Dominica
- Duration: 8 Days
- Location: Soufriere
Airport shuttle transports you to our boutique eco-lodge in Soufrière, on the southern tip of Dominica.
Dinner at the eco-lodge’s cliffside restaurant, and tour briefing.
We head out to the breathtaking, UNESCO-listed Morne Trois Pitons National Park for a morning hike to a majestic waterfall, where we can cool off in a refreshing natural pool.
Lunch at a quaint local spot specializing in “provisions” – locally grown dasheen, breadfruit and plantains.
In the afternoon, we head up to the cloud forest for an otherworldly hike around Freshwater Lake, with panoramic views of mist-covered volcanic peaks.
Activity Level: Moderate. Each hike is about 1.5 hours in duration, with a few steep uphills but overall minimal elevation. Trails can be slippery due to rainfall and uneven ground.
Enjoy a massage or relax by the pool back at the hotel.
Dinner at the eco-lodge.
Dive, snorkel or do a discovery dive in the deep blue waters of the marine preserve.
We hear from the Island’s leading coral reef conservationist about efforts to protect the reserve from an invasive disease that has threatened the biodiversity of coral reefs across the Caribbean.
For dinner, we learn to prepare a Creole meal at the home of a local chef and enjoy some homebrewed rum punch.
Start the day rappelling beside waterfalls and jumping into crystalline pools as we go 'canyoning' through a twisting, rock-sculpted gorge.
In the afternoon, we go kayaking and pull up to Scott’s Head Peninsula, which divides the Caribbean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean, for a quick hike to the top and amazing views.
Activity Level: Moderate. No prior experience is required for canyoning or kayaking. For canyoning, guests should be prepared to scramble over rocks and be comfortable with heights, including jumping into water from a height of up to 8 ft.
Guests can opt out of either activity.
We stop at a beachside bush bar to watch the sunset. Dinner at the eco-lodge.
Day 5 Sustainable Farm Tour + Kalinago Spiritual Cleanse
We head over to the north end of the Island for a full day of experiences, starting with a tour and some foraging on a unique permaculture farm, developed for climate resiliency and regenerative agriculture.
In the afternoon we stop at the beach before entering Kalinago Territory, the home of the last remaining Indigenous peoples of the Caribbean.
A shaman leads us in a Kalinago spiritual cleanse, followed by a traditional meal with elders. We learn about the Kalinago’s unique history and what they are doing to keep their traditions alive.
We head into the hills above the eco-lodge for a scenic two-hour hike through villages with picturesque ocean views, stopping for lunch at a colourful local eatery.
In the afternoon we learn about Dominica’s bush tea tradition and the Island's amazing variety of plants and their medicinal qualities.
Dinner at the Island’s best restaurant, founded by three Montreal chefs, who serve up an elevated fusion of Creole and contemporary cuisine.
Today we take on the famous 13 km hike to Boiling Lake, the world’s second largest volcano-heated hot springs. Alternative activity available, such as snorkeling, for those looking for a more moderate option.
Activity Level: Challenging. Taking six to eight hours to complete, it is muddy, slippery and steep in parts, and is a full-day commitment. Cumulative elevation gain: 1,031 metres or 3,382 feet.
Final tour dinner at the eco-lodge.
After breakfast, a shuttle transports you to the airport.
